Amazon’s Android Appstore now Available in India

amazon app storeThe Android App store at Amazon is a good alternative to Google’s own Android market for several reasons.

Amazon frequently has deals in place where you can download premium Android apps either for free or at a discount, their app store is nicely integrated with the Amazon.com website and, best of all, you can test drive apps in the browser without having to buy them.

The Android App store was earlier available to customers in the United States only but that restriction is no longer in place. You can now download Android apps from the Amazon store in India and possibly other international countries as well.

To get started, open the following URL - amazon.com/appstorelanding - in the mobile browser of your Android phone. This should download the Amazon Appstore app on your phone and you can then log in using your existing Amazon.com to start shopping.

I tried downloading a free app, a paid app and a premium is available for free today and all three transactions went through without a hitch. Once you have installed the Amazon App on your Android phone, you can also start shopping from the Amazon’s online store and your purchases will auto-download the next time you launch the Android app.

The only downside is that the test-drive feature for Android apps on Amazon.com is still not live for international users. Thank you Shantanu Goel for the tip.

[*] Google has a 15-minute refund policy for Android Market.

T-Mobile G-Slate 3.1 Android Update Disables Bootloader

You you are the proud owner of a T-Mobile Android LG G-Slate a new Android 3.1 update has rolled out from LG that provides some great new features but also brings with it a possible problems for some users, as it locks down the bootloader on the device.

The 3.1 Android updated for the T-Mobile LG G-Slate introduces Google videos, USB accessory support and homescreen resizable widgets to name a few new items. But the locking of the bootloader function will now restrict many users that are used to personalising their T-Mobile G-Slate devices.

T-Mobile G-Slate

Once the bootloader is locked you will be unable  to root and flash custom roms, kernels and you will need to now hack and unlock the LG G-Slate to preform these functions. First impressions of the new update seem to indicate that the locking of the bootloader is not a glitch but a roll out by LG.

ThinkFlood Launches RedEye Universal Remote Control App On Android

Thinkflood has this week finally  launched an Android version of its great universal remote control application that arrived on iOS devices nearly two years ago. The new Android RedEye application allows you to to control your other Redeye connected gadgets including your home theatre, lighting, HVAC, and others using Android networked smartphones and tablets.

Redeye Android App

The RedEye Android app is compatible with networked RedEye products including RedEye and RedEye Pro and supports devices running Android 1.6 and later, including tablets running 3.0 Honeycomb.

Unfortunately the RedEye application is not support by the RedEye Mini device, ThinkFlood explains why below:

“Although RedEye mini compatibility is a popular request, RedEye mini requires further research into the headphone jack on various Android handsets, as well as additional development using the Android NDK (Java code cannot keep up with RedEye mini’s real-time audio processing requirements).”

You can download the new free RedEye application from the Android Market now.
